Slanted Volume is a private residence in Thrissur, Kerala, designed for a multi generational family returning to Kerala after decades of living in Goa. The brief called for a modest house shaped by everyday living rather than formality, drawing from spatial sensibilities familiar to both regions. The shared coastal climate of Kerala and Goa, marked by heavy monsoons, high humidity, and outdoor oriented domestic life, became a quiet but consistent influence on the architecture.
Built on a compact plot along a calm residential street, the house avoids defensive gestures. The site sits naturally about one meter above road level, allowing the front edge to be defined by a low rubble retaining wall with a minimal metal pipe grill instead of a solid compound wall. This creates visual openness to the street while maintaining privacy through level difference, reinforcing the idea of the house as an accommodating entity rather than an isolated object.
